Back in France again

Back in France again

By:Nancy Chardin
Hey,

Two weeks ago I had my last collegiate tournament of the school year in the US. The tournament was in Zachary, Louisiana and my team organized the tournament. We had to plan everything, find judges and drivers and take care of them during the weekend. Each of us had a duty for the weekend. Mine was to take care of snacks for judges. It went pretty smoothly and everyone had a great time. Concerning the result, I was happy about my skiing, I won slalom, jump and overall and got 2nd in tricks. I had a lot of fun this year again at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as a Raging Cajun! We have a great team and we all get along really well, I can’t wait to see all of them this summer on tournaments!

After that tournament I had my final exams and I finally went back to France last Monday. I took the first two days off, and spent time with my family. I also had a great surprise when I got home, I could finally see the rest of my 2012 Jobe gear! I think every year the products are getting better. I love my new slalom outfit; it's all red, real bright for the summer :) I'm now skiing 5 days a week. My next tournament will be end of June in South West of France, so I have quite a lot of time to get ready for it. I'm now slaloming with a new coach, and I really enjoy skiing with him. I think he has a great eye to see what's wrong and I like the way he is coaching. Let's see in June if my results will get better!

I'll keep you posted on how my season is going!

Cheers,

Nancy

Mandurah World Cup

Mandurah World Cup

By:Nancy Chardin
Hey,

It's been a while since I've written a blog, but I've been super busy. Last time I talked to you I was training for a world cup in Australia.
Well, I travelled from the US to Perth, Australia on the 13th of March and got there the 15th. It's a pretty long trip. The next day we had training in the afternoon. I woke up in the morning, had breakfast and went to have a look at the lake. The city was beautiful, the lake as well, but not really meant for water skiing... It was like the ocean, I could see that It was not going to be an easy place to ski.

Anyway practice started around 2:00pm. The first girl went on the water, and just did a single set and almost crashed. It was obviously really hard to ski, super choppy. A few other girls tried to jump and it was around the same situation. Our only goal was to make it to the ramp without falling, that’s how hard it was! We usually jump around 50meters, but this time we hardly jumped 20 meters. I had practiced as well and made it to the ramp but I could see that there was no way I would be able to have a decent cut for the tournament. Anyway, I was trying not getting too nervous about it; it was the same condition for everyone.
The next day started with wakeboard prelims and then tricks. We were suppose to jump that day but the conditions were even worse, so the judges decided to cancel prelims. We all could go straight to finals on Sunday. Now I was getting very nervous, there was only one round for jumping in those conditions.

When it was finally time for skiing, I was feeling a bit better. I was 5th of the dock, so I could watch a couple of girls jumping before me. They were doing about the same as at practice, around 20,25 meters. I ended up jumping 28.7 meters and got 5th. We were all jumping about the same, doing a mini 3/4 cut. I felt like I was a beginner, but that’s how it is. Conditions are rarely good at the World Cup, so we just have to deal with it and try to do our best. It was a great experience and the organization was pretty good. There were also lots of dolphins where we skied. It was crazy; they were not scared at all!
On Monday it was time to go home, 2 days travel again. And I had class at 7:30am the day after; I wasn’t looking forward to that! The whole week was pretty hard for me, because I was really busy with school and I had a huge jetlag. I was sleeping during the day and was awake at night; it took me a while to get back to normal.

At the end of this week, our spring break will start. I'm going to stay in Louisiana because I need to study and work a lot. I will still be skiing every day. I need to get ready for the next tournament, which will be the last weekend of April.

I will keep you posted!

Cheers,

Nancy

Hey!

After a great month in France, I'm back to school in Louisiana. I've been pretty busy since I came back. I have a lot of classes this semester and I had to find an internship for this semester. I finally found one, I'll start working next Saturday in a hotel. Since I'm not American, I had to fill in so many papers in order to be able to work legally in the US.

I recently received some good news, I am invited to participate at a World Cup in Australia in March. I better get ready for this tournament! Luckily the weather has been pretty nice in Louisiana, it's been around 20°C / 25°C, so I already started skiing. I did a couple of slalom and trick sets. I started jumping last week end. It feels nice to be back on the water so early in the season.

I now have 5 weeks to get ready for this World Cup, so I'm going to ski and workout as much as I can. I go to the gym 4 to 5 times a week and ski almost every day depending on the skiing conditions. At the beginning it's hard to be motivated to go to the gym but once you get the rhythm it's alright. It feels so much easier now, I don't get tired as fast as when I started working out.

I'll bring my Gopro and my camera to Australia and I'll try to show you the best moments of the tournament.

Cheers,

Nancy

From waterski to snow ski!

From waterski to snow ski!

By:Nancy Chardin

As I told you in my last blog, I'm back in France since the 11th of December and since then I've been snow skiing in the French Alps!

Hitting the snow ski slopes is an excellent way to keep in shape during the waterski off -season. The first 3 days killed my legs. My calves and thighs were so sore.
I told my coach that I was going to the mountains and he told me to ski every day and once or twice a week to go for an hour of cross- country skiing.

It's been almost three weeks that I've been skiing and I feel so much better than at the beginning. I'm not sore anymore and I can ski so much longer, I don't have to take a break every 5 minutes anymore!

Besides I realized that waterski and snow ski requires similar techniques. In fact, they both involve weight shifts and lateral movements. They also require turning your legs and hips at the waist without turning the upper body; the lower body is doing the work. I'm trying to think about letting the ski moves underneath me to change the edge; the edge change starts at the feet not at the shoulders. That's the biggest similarities I can think of. It's pretty fun to try to implement the same movement in a different sport.

I'll be here one more week before flying back to Louisiana to go back to school. One more week of fun workout before going back to the good old indoor gym... gotta make it count!
Cheers,

Nancy

Winter break

Winter break

By:Nancy Chardin
Hey!

I'm finally back home! :)
I had my final exams last week, it was a pretty busy week with lots of studying... Nevertheless I passed all my classes! My last exam was on Friday. Friday night our coach from the university (USA) invited us for a Christmas dinner and I had my plane on Saturday. I arrived in France yesterday morning. I'm going to spend a month here in France before going back to Louisiana (USA) for the Spring semester on the 10th of January.
When I wrote you last time, I told you I was going to have a Skype conference about my workout plan. We actually talked about the past season, the good things and what should I change for next season. The team captain wants me to workout out more this winter, so I will meet my coach tomorrow to do some tests and find a workout out plan that I could do while I'm in Louisiana. I am in the waterski team, so I have access to a big gym with everything I will need. This month I've been there quite a lot, around 4 to 5 times a week. I usually did a circuit training 2 to 3 times a week and run for 45 minutes 2 times a week. The first time I did the circuit training I couldn't walk for the next three days. But I improved fast, I was getting a lot better at the end.
Then from next week and until the end of the break I will be in the mountains to ski in the snow. I will be there with some waterski friends, this should be fun. I have a GoPro video camera, so I will probably do a little video about it.
I will keep you posted!

Meet Nancy Chardin

Meet Nancy Chardin

By:Nancy Chardin
Hi all!

This is my first blog and I'm really excited about it. I'll first give you an introduction about me. My name is Nancy Chardin, I'm 23 years old. I've been in the Open French waterski team since the age of 18. I've been living in Louisiana for now a year in order to be able to ski and study at the same time. It's been a great experience being here. This allows me to ski every day because I am part of the university ski team and we have a lake 5 minutes away from school. Our team is pretty good, we were National Champion last year and got second this year. Individually I won trick both years, and last year I also won overall and got second in jump.

There are no more tournaments this season so I'm skiing a bit less, just few times a week, working on new tricks and on my technique in slalom and jump. I also work out 4 to 5 times a week. This year wasn't my best season, but this makes me want to train more and come back stronger! I've been thinking about it and I remember that I was skiing a lot better when I was working out more. I am convinced that if I focus more on my workout during the offseason I will come back better than ever! I will have a phone conference on Monday to talk about it with my team captain and figure out my winter planning.

I'll keep you posted!
Cheers

Nancy
