The 10 most beautiful destinations to SUP in America
12 abril 2018
The USA is an awe-inspiring destination to SUP. In our version the best way to chase the so-called ‘American Dream’. The USA is about so many things: bluegrass and beaches, redwood forests, big open skies and even bigger cities. We almost can’t summarize this great country but we’ve tried to sum up our top 10 favourite must-seen spots to SUP.
1. Lake Tahoe
The shimmering Lake Tahoe (beautiful blue and green), is the USA’s second-deepest lake and, at 6255ft high, it is also one of the highest-elevation lakes in the country. Driving around the spellbinding 72-mile scenic shoreline will give you quite a workout behind the wheel. However, to jump on your SUP and discover the lake from the water will make your jaws drop. Generally, the north shore is quiet and upscale; the west shore is rugged and rough. The east shore is undeveloped and the south shore is busy and a bit tacky if you ask us. Experience the transition of all these different surroundings in silence and don’t forget to make some pics.
Coronado is a true resort city located in San Diego County, California. It’s connected to the mainland by a tombolo called the Silver Strand. And exactly this spot is a great way to start your SUP-adventure. Did you know the director of the laboratory for coastal research ranked Coronado Beach as the best beach in the USA? A must-see!
Covering the southern 5 miles of South Padre Island, South Padre Island has a soft and sunny climate. Therefore, the water is warm for much of the year, the beaches are clean and the easy-going locals are ready to welcome every tourist!
As the western gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake is a foil to the hub of Estes Park. The super charming downtown historic district has a number of nice cafes for your SUP-break. Don’t forget to buy a corny souvenir! The namesake lake – with a yacht club founded in 1901 – is deep-blue and glorious, and offers lots of bed and breakfasts if you want to go on a more-day SUP-tour.
Florida is different. Florida is easy-going. Here you find people who want to enjoy life and enjoy their banana-cocktail even more. Don’t forget to stop SUPping every few 100 meters to visit one of the sandbar-island where the sun melts over the green mangroves. The water is as teal as Arizona turquoise and invites for a good swim too.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the inverse geographic feature! A dark, narrow gash above the Gunnison River leads down a 2000ft chasm is seriously spectacular to see from your SUP. Try SUPping here only if you are an experience SUPper and in for an adventure. The fast-moving water is powerful. Without the upstream dams, the river carry five times its current volume!
Did you know in the 1960s the construction of a massive dam flooded Glen Canyon, forming Lake Powell, a recreational playground. Almost 50 years later this is still an environmental hot-button topic, but generations of Western families have grown up boating here. This lake is perfect for waterskiing- and other watersports like SUPping. Water laps against stunning cliffs that rise hundreds of feet; narrow channels make SUPping here feel like a true adventure.
For most, any trip to the Empire State starts or finishes in its iconic metropolis: New York City! However, if you were to confine your travels only to its five boroughs and a little beyond, you'd be missing out big time! Discovering New York from its surrounding waters is such a cool experience, which can’t be beaten by a frappucino in the nearby cool-people bar.
Indulge your spirit of adventure on the biggest Hawaiian island! Who says you need to pay pennies to experience Hawaii its wonders? Throw your SUP into the waters and discover its far stretching beautiful white waters from your SUP. And please, send in your #jobemoments to make us jealous.
