SUP, also known as stand up paddling, is an activity where people stand on a floating board and paddle themselves through the water. Supping is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport got another huge boost in popularity. During this pandemic, people started looking for new and safe activities. Stand up paddling turned out to be the perfect activity for this!
The modern stand up paddling was found around the 40’s by John Ah Choy in Waikiki (Hawaii) and trough the years, it has formed into a fully developed sport. Halfway the zeros of this century, stand up paddling started to change to the world of supping we know nowadays. The first touring boards started to hit the market and also other board shapes started to originate. After that the yoga, windsurf and allround boards were introduced in the market. From this moment, stand up paddling became an activity for all kinds of people with all kinds of focusses. Wide boards are perfect for yoga and allround supping and narrower boards are perfect for touring as they cut better trough the water thanks to their streamlined design.
People describe stand up paddling as a relaxing activity which is healthy for your body and perfect to enjoy the beautiful nature at the same time. During stand up paddling, you use almost every single muscle in your body, which makes it one of the most healthy sports in the world! Stand up paddle boards are available in all kinds of shapes, and they are made with all kinds of materials. The most popular type of boards are inflatable boards. These boards are super practical as they are very easy to carry to wherever you like! You just unroll your sup, inflate it and you’re ready to hit the water! These inflatable boards are mostly sold in a package which include a bag which carries the board, the paddle, the leash, the pump and the fin.
Next to inflatables there are also solid boards! These boards are less practical to go to the water, but way more durable and they’ll save you the pumping time. Perfect when you live close to the water (or when your car is big enough to bring a hardshell board wherever you want 😉).
Next to the boards there are also loads of necessities and accessories which can improve your paddle sessions. Paddles come in all kinds of materials which all have their own weight. Aluminum are affordable and solid but they weigh a little bit more than the ultra-light fiberglass/carbon paddles.
There is also lots of choice when choosing a pump to inflate your board. A standard double action pump is affordable and will inflate your board within 10 minutes. A triple action pump will save you half the time when pumping the board. There are also electric pumps (with 230v of 12v connectors) which will do all the work for you.
